BioAkilah lived and breathed politics for seven years as a lawyer-lobbyist at a swanky firm on Washington, D.C’s infamous “K Street” where she got paid big bucks to represent companies like Starbucks and Delta Airlines. She was “living the dream.” It just wasn’t her dream. And you can only fake the funk for so long before you get what Akilah calls “going-through-the-motions sickness.”

So on April Fools’ Day 2013, a year shy of making partner at her firm, Akilah packed her things — just a flat screen and two wine glasses — and moved cross-country to Los Angeles to pursue a career in TV writing. Shortly after she arrived, Comedian and Showrunner Greg Fitzsimmons hired her as a Writers’ Assistant for a VH1 pop culture show, and she was chosen to write for the CBS Diversity Sketch Comedy Showcase.

Akilah has worked as a Staff Writer on Chelsea Handler’s late night talk show, Chelsea (Netflix), a Staff Writer for Kevin Hart’s production company, HartBeat Productions, and a Consultant on Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO). She has also written for The New York Times and The Root. See her full list of credits here.

As a cab driver said to her about quitting her “fancy lawyer job…to write jokes,” “Life is once.

An only child, Akilah was born and raised in the suburbs of Houston, Texas. She earned her B.S. from the University of Texas at Austin (Hook em’ Horns!) in 3 years and earned her J.D. from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) at the ripe age of 24. She has yet to take her degrees out of the cylindrical cardboard thingies in which they came….There’s really no point to it now. Akilah currently resides in The Beverly Grove neighborhood in Los Angeles. She spends her days writing, taking long walks through heavily populated metropolitan areas (because mountain lions are scarier than meth heads), and actively trying not to develop an eating disorder or a drinking problem.
